The reason for the PPA is that the Panama Canal now requires information at each bridge wing. The PPA is a cost effective alternative to permanent instrumentation outside on the bridge wings. Of course, if a ship prefers instrumentation AMI can provide that too!
The system consists of a transmitter display unit (on the left of the picture) with any number of portable receiver display units.
Speed and propulsion data comes from our range of interfaces, heading displays and SMIDS "doppler" docking system.
Incidentally the PPA transmitter is then an ideal source for data for input to the Voyage Data Recorder. The system could be used from ship to dockside, ship to tug, and for aiding replenishment at sea.
The system uses low range licence free and type approved radio telemetry, with codes for many hundreds of users.
